What personal accident cover pays

When you buy the cover, you choose a sum insured: the benefit level the policy is built on. Each benefit is a set share of that level, up to the limits on your plan, so you know in advance what a claim would pay.

Accidental death: a lump sum is paid to your family. Permanent disability: a percentage of the sum insured is paid, depending on how serious the disability is. Temporary disability: a benefit is paid while an accident keeps you from your usual work. Medical expenses: treatment costs caused by the accident are reimbursed, up to your plan limit.

How it differs from medical insurance

Medical insurance pays hospitals and doctors for treating illness and injury. Personal accident cover pays a cash benefit to you, on top of any treatment cover, and only for accidents.

The two work together. Medical cover settles the hospital bill. Personal accident cover helps with time off work and supports your family after a death. Many people hold both.

Personal accident cover is also different from life insurance. It pays on death only when the death is caused by an accident.

Who can buy it online

AAR personal accident plans cover students, adults, children and families. A group student plan lets a school, college or parent cover several students on one policy.

You can buy online if you are a student, or an adult aged 18 to 65 in an office-based job. Children can be covered from age 6 to 17.

For any other occupation, choose Other and leave your details. Our underwriting team will call you back, because this cover cannot be completed online.

How the premium is set

Your premium depends on two things: the benefit level you choose and the type of cover (student, adult, child, family or group). A higher sum insured pays more on a claim and costs more each year.

The premium is annual. You see the exact price for each benefit level when you build a quote online.
